MP Representation Project
The Legislative Environmental Representation Project was successfully
implemented by ZELA from October 2002 – December 2003. The project
was being supported by the World Resources Institute (WRI). It was part
of an African-wide research and advocacy initiative in the following countries;
Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Cameroon, Kenya, Liberia, Uganda, and Tanzania.
ZELA worked closely with the Guruve North Constituency to determine
the activities, roles and responsibilities of the Member of Parliament
in resolving the human-wildlife conflicts that are on the rise in the
area. Through this research the organization has been able to establish
strong ties with the Mines, Energy and Environment Portfolio Committee.
As a result of this intercourse with legislators ZELA is now in a strong
position to influence and lobby the Committee on any environmental issue
with the specific objective of influencing policy and legal changes.
After the research ZELA was chosen by the World Resources Institute to
host an African regional conference on legislative environmental representation
at Victoria Falls from 24-28 October 2003. The conference was successfully
organized and facilitated by ZELA. This project has managed to sensitise
legislators on the need to represent the environmental interests of their
constituencies. The research results are in the process of being compiled
into a book on environmental representation in Zimbabwe. The interim project
report is available online for further details on the findings and recommendations.
