Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Campaign
ZELA is a member of the Publish What You Pay (PWYP) campaign. The Publish What You Pay campaign (www.publishwhatyoupay.org) is a global coalition of civil society organizations that seek to hold resource rich governments accountable for the management of revenues from oil, gas and mining industries. The PWYP campaign was launched in 2002 and works with civil society organizations in 70 countries. It advocates and campaigns for mandatory disclosure of company payments and government revenues and also calls for disclosure of licensing arrangements and contracts. The coalition stresses that companies should publish what they pay and governments should “publish what they earn”.
In order to generate interest amongst civil society organisations, ZELA has been working closely with the Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) to raise awareness about the PWYP campaign in Zimbabwe. The project is based on holding training workshops and seminars on PWYP. In 2011 ZELA will officially launch the PWYP Zimbabwe Chapter in partnership with SARW. This will be done in consultation with the PWYP secretariat. Through the PWYP campaign ZELA intends to ensure that civil society organisations in Zimbabwe come together to call government and mining companies to account by publishing mining contracts and revenue. The existence of such a platform will ensure that CSOs share information and skills on how to bring government and mining companies to account.
